The basketball team was the catalyst for the athletics program and formed it’s first team in 2009, competing in adult leagues in the city. Now it boasts a full schedule against collegiate teams from November – March which culminates with the Northeast Art School Basketball Invitational (NASBI). The team is open to all gender.
The history of the New School Basketball Team is short and sweet. In 2009 a student, Alex Knapp (now assistant coach) decided that it was time for our storied school to have an athletics team. A small but dedicated group of students answered the call to play in a Chelsea Piers Men’s League, which has now turned into a full-fledged varsity team that plays other universities in the Northeast.
Jules Neuman graduated from Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts in 2011 with a degree focused in creative writing, literature, and a minor in poetry. In his time there, he was also a founding member/player on the first competitive sports team The New School had ever had, the basketball team. After graduating, Jules has been involved in many creative endeavors, trying to get a writing career underway, one focused in film criticism. He’s remained heavily involved with The New School basketball program, now known as the Narwhals, takes on the title of assistant coach, under fellow founding member/player/head coach/great friend, David Privat-Gilman.
Alex graduated from Eugene Lang College at The New School in 2012 with a B.A in Culture and Media. In 2009, while attending Lang and participating in Intramural sports, Alex noticed the potential and desire of other New School athletes, and took steps to form what is now – The New School Basketball Team. With the help of Student Services and the Recreation Department, Alex watched the team grow each season.Alex was a 3-year captain of The New School Basketball Team, and led the team in points and rebounds each season he played.Currently working in the NY film and entertain industry, Alex finds time to volunteer as assistant coach for the team he helped create. He is extremely happy with the progression of this program over the years, and is very excited for the upcoming season.
Miguel received his BA from The University of British Columbia, two Master’s degrees from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, and is currently working on his PHD in philosophy at The New School for Social Research. His love and understanding of the game began under the tutelage of Julio Salazar and then developed through several years of playing for Jose ‘Joe’ Tapias. Academically, Miguel’s research focuses on genealogical theories of the mind as well as in phenomenology and process philosophy. A keen interest in ‘pataphysics underlies all his research on Üexkull and Hundertwasser. Having been an assistant with the Narwhals for several years now, Miguel is very pleased with the team’s progress and is very optimistic for the upcoming season.
