Season Preview Soccer Fall 2016

The Fall Season is upon us once again after a hot and humid summer in the city. This year’s soccer team expects to be very exciting in the upcoming 2016-2017 season. There was no formal spring season, but the squad still trained once a week on Friday evenings, mostly indoor, limited touch soccer. This was honing each individual’s close control for the fall. A number of squad members were also introduced into a Friday evening 8v8 league at Pier 40. After a tough first game, the team rallied and finished in a well-respected 4th position out of 10.
The number of returning athletes is many, with only 5 players of the 20-person squad retiring after graduation, some undergraduate, and other graduate students. The returning athletes are well positioned to take last year’s workouts to the next level of possessing the ball as much as possible, while moving up the field. This style of play is tough to grasp, but when it comes off the results are rewarding to say the least.
This season is the first season in which The New School soccer team will compete in a league format, playing in The New York Metro League. Previously, we were only playing non-competitive, non-conference games against other schools. This year is exciting and more so different!!! This will pitch us up against the like of Columbia University’s club squad, Stony Brook out on Long Island, Fordham, Stevens in Hoboken and Adelphi. To go along with these conference games, we will continue our traditional Village Cup game against fierce rivals Cooper Union. Expect a tough, fun and engaging season all around!!!
WE NEED YOU – The students of The New School to help us out. We need support for all our games as we enter into this exciting phase of our embryonic program. Please join us in creating a buzz around campus to gain further traction and excitement. All information will be posted on the website at narwhalnation.com as well as in the Athletic Department’s weekly newsletter.
If you would like to join the team – Please don’t hesitate to contact Head Coach George Ellis at ellig423@newschool.edu
Be sure to include – Position, former soccer experience and availability. Games throughout the season are held on a Saturday or Sunday (Randall’s Island or Away games) and practice sessions are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (East River Park, or TBD).

Here’s to a thrilling season!
